Post ntfs-3g Input/output error
Hello,

I have two disks formated with NTFS, which I can no longer read or write under Debian Jessie.
I may have broken the installation, or it may have broken by a recent upgrade/dist-upgrade, I really can't tell.
At first I thought my HD was corrupt, gone or otherwise fubar.

However: the disk can be read and written under: Windows 7, Mac OSX, Backtrack 5. So, I doubt its a problem with the disk, which I did check for errors.
Also, another NTFS external disk cannot be read, and out of curiosity, after formatting a usb stick with NTFS, it too can no longer be read or written.
The error I keep getting is:
Code:
ls: cannot access lex: Input/output error

or
Code:
ls -l
ls: cannot access lex: Input/output error
total 0
-????????? ? ? ? ?            ? lex

Which by itself doesn't say much. I have ruled out disk errors by running on all disks both ntfsfix & chkdisk under win 7.
on my Syslog, I get:

Code:
Oct 31 05:09:26 ntfs-3g[1765]: Version 2014.2.15AR.2 integrated FUSE 28
Oct 31 05:09:26 ntfs-3g[1765]: Mounted /dev/sdd1 (Read-Write, label "RESCUE", NTFS 3.1)
Oct 31 05:09:26 ntfs-3g[1765]: Cmdline options: rw
Oct 31 05:09:26 ntfs-3g[1765]: Mount options: rw,allow_other,nonempty,relatime,fsname=/dev/sdd1,blkdev,blksize=4096
Oct 31 05:09:26 ntfs-3g[1765]: Ownership and permissions disabled, configuration type 7

Other than that, I get no errors from dmesg, messages, or other log file.
Can anyone please help?

Which kernel are you using ? What is the output of :
Code:
uname -a

For users of legacy kernels or CPUs, a static version compiled for an old Knoppix is maintained. No install needed for a try, just download the zip file from http://jp-andre.pagesperso-orange.fr/ad ... fs-3g.html unzip it, make executable, then mount :
Code:
unzip -x linked-ntfs-3g-2014.2.15AR.2.zip linked-ntfs-3g
chmod 555 linked-ntfs-3g
# as root
# /dev/sdd1 must not be mounted
# mountpoint must be an existing empty directory
./linked-ntfs-3g /dev/sdd1 mountpoint

Hello Jean Pierre, ty for the prompt reply.

I'm using Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 from the debian repositories.
The system isn't old, and whats even more troubling, is that I formetted one of the hard disks, and tried again, and it still won't read.
Also, I tried with another usb stick (which was working as vfat) and when formatted as ntfs it gets mounted, but no read or write.
Is there some way to tap into a debug version of ntfs-3g or try and figure out why this is happening?

Regards,
Alex

A few suggestions :

Not being able to display the file attributes generally points at a permissions issue. Where is your mount point ? What are its permissions ? Do you use a fstab entry for this mount point ?

A try with linked-ntfs-3g as shown above will tell whether the issue is within ntfs-3g or in the environment (or in the packaging). If linked-ntfs-3g also fails, retry with the earlier linked-ntfs-3g-2014.2.15AR.1 from the same location.

ntfsinfo may show something unusual in your partition formatting (which options did you use for formatting your devices ?)
Code:
# as root
ntfsinfo -fm /dev/sdd1

Finally, the debug option will show at which stage something went wrong :
Code:
# as root, with the partition not mounted initially
# mountpoint being an existing void directory
ntfs-3g -o debug /dev/sdd1 mountpoint 2> debug.log &
# insert a minimal sequence leading to an error, such as :
ls -l mountpoint
umount mountpoint
gzip debug.log

Then attach the debug.log.gz to your reply (compression is required on this forum).

Regards

Jean-Pierre

Post Re: ntfs-3g Input/output error
Hello,

I solved the problem by downrgading to an earlier version of ntfs-3g.
In Debian Jessie, I had installed:
Code:
ntfs-3g 1:2014

which doesn't seem to work (not only for me, but for others too). I guess it may be a packaging error, don't really know.
When I reverted to Wheezy's package:
Code:
1:2012.1.15AR.5-2.1

The problem was fixed.

Thanks for the help :-)

You would be helpful in telling which version of ntfs-3g does not work on which version of kernel.
To show the kernel version, please post the output of :
Code:
uname -a

To show the ntfs-3g version, please post the first two lines output by :
Code:
ntfs-3g -help

Names like Jessie or Wheezy are not useful, as they hide the updates and the actual technical version.

As mentioned before, my kernel is:
Code:
Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.63-2+deb7u1 x86_64 GNU/Linux

on Debian 7.7 (currently stable, code-named "Wheezy")

The version of ntfs-3g is:
Code:
ntfs-3g 2012.1.15AR.5 external FUSE 29 - Third Generation NTFS Driver
Configuration type 7, XATTRS are on, POSIX ACLS are on

Which is packaged under:
Code:
ntfs-3g 1:2012.1.15AR.5-2.1

which is working (stable).

The version that did not work and produced the input/ouput error, was on the same kernel, but instead was version
Code:
ntfs-3g 1:2014.2.15AR.2-1

packaged for Debian 8.0 (currently Testing, code-named "Jessie").

Debian might be using a different versioning system, I don't know if those versions match with what you release.

Regards,
Alex

Hi,

It has been reported that, when running on old kernels, ntfs-3g 2014.2.15AR.2 may fall back to a fuse protocol level which is not supported.

Attached is a patch to fix the issue.

Regards

Jean-Pierre
