Post Failed to read vcn 0x8 - Debian squeezy 2.6.32-5-i686
Lurked but couldn't find the right post, therefore i typed
this down:

The partition i'd like to mount is on an external usb drive as
follows:

root@host:/media# fdisk -l /dev/sdb
Note: sector size is 4096 (not 512)

Disk /dev/sdb: 2000.4 GB, 2000398934016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30400 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 4096 = 65802240 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x8517b45f

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 15200 976751748 7 HPFS/NTFS
Partition 1 does not start on physical sector boundary.
/dev/sdb2 15201 30401 976762244 7 HPFS/NTFS
Partition 2 does not start on physical sector boundary.

---
root@host:/media# mount -t ntfs-3g -o force /dev/sdb2 /media/part2
Failed to read vcn 0x8: Input/output error
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb2': Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
for more details.
---

The first partition instead mounts properly, while sdb2 mounts
eventually in ro mode (no files visible), even after ntfsfix, gparted
"partition check" and w32 system chkntfs /F.

On another w32 system everything works fine.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi,

What is your ntfs-3g version ? You need at least ntfs-3g-2012.1.15 to mount a file system using 4K sectors. Also be sure not to format the device with an older mkntfs.

Regards
