Post FATAL: Error inserting fuse...: Invalid module format
Hi

I'm facing few problems with ntfs-3g. Please read through.

[root@erp11i dev]# mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1/ /mnt/Stage11i/
FATAL: Module fuse not found.
ntfs-3g-mount: fuse device is missing, try 'modprobe fuse' as root

[root@erp11i dev]# uname -a
Linux erp11i.homelnx01.com 2.6.9-55.0.0.0.2.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed May 2 14:59:56 PDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

The I installed -> fuse-2.6.5.tar.gz

After that when I tried to mount the NTFS drive, it throws the following error.

[root@erp11i ~]# mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1/ /mnt/Stage11i/
FATAL: Error inserting fuse (/lib/modules/2.6.9-55.0.0.0.2.ELsmp/kernel/fs/fuse/fuse.ko): Invalid module format
ntfs-3g-mount: fuse device is missing, try 'modprobe fuse' as root
[root@erp11i ~]#

Any help is really appreciated.

Thanks,

The I installed -> fuse-2.6.5.tar.gz

This is an old kernel and an old fuse. I have no idea whether these are compatible versions. ntfs-3g recommends kernel >= 2.6.20.

Did you use a compiler compatible with the one which was used to compile the kernel ?
No details in the syslog ?

So by the above do you say that ntfs-3g is not compatible with Redhat Linux 4 U5?

I'm a newbie in Linux OS environment and really have no idea how to confirm you on the above things. I"m sorry. However, I did a find and result is below.

[root@erp11i Stage11i]# find / -name 'syslog'
/var/lock/subsys/syslog
/etc/sysconfig/syslog
/etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog
/etc/logrotate.d/syslog
find: /proc/5740/task: No such file or directory

Can you please advise me further?

Thanks a zillion!

Hi Jean,

i checked the messgaes in /var/log/messages and it says the following:
Jan 13 15:38:14 erp11i kernel: fuse: version magic '2.6.9-55.0.0.0.2.ELsmp SMP 686 REGPARM 4KSTACKS gcc-3.2' should be '2.6.9-55.0.0.0.2.ELsmp SMP 686 REGPARM 4KSTACKS gcc-3.4'

So does it mean that I need to have higher gcc version?

Awaiting your reply.

Apparently yes, you must have compiled with gcc-3.2, but the kernel was compiled with gcc-3.4.

So do you mean to uninstall the ntfs-3g and re-install again? Please also advise how to compile with gcc3.2

Many thanks,

Hi again,

Not at all.

Your problem is related to the part of fuse which is plugged into the kernel (the so called "kernel module"). This part has to be compiled with the same compiler as the kernel.

You first have to install gcc3.2. You should try to locate a ready-to-use version which was released with your system. Compiling gcc from source (http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gcc/) might be a complex task. When this is done, repeat the configure, make and install steps for fuse.
