Post How am I supposed to create a "C:" symlink in .NTFS-3G?
Hi,

this is basically a copy of my superuser.com question: http://superuser.com/questions/515533/h ... -3g-folder

I need to create a symlink mapping for a cross-partition ntfs symlink:
Code:
224031    0 lrwxrwxrwx 2 root root   40 Aug  5  2010 creations -> /media/Daten/.NTFS-3G/W:/

But how am I supposed to do that considering a colon is not allowed in NTFS file names?
Code:
strayer@layer:/media/Daten/.NTFS-3G$ ls -lisah
insgesamt 13K
105347   0 drwxrwxrwx 1 root root   0 Dez  5 21:38 .
     5 12K drwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12K Dez  6 09:47 ..
105348 512 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  42 Dez  5 21:38 W -> /media/truecrypt1
strayer@layer:/media/Daten/.NTFS-3G$ LANG="" sudo ln -s /media/truecrypt1/ "./W:"
ln: failed to create symbolic link `./W:': Invalid argument

Hmm, good question !

Actually NTFS allows colons in name, only Windows does not. Your symlink creation is probably rejected because you mounted the partition with option windows_names. If so, you can probably temporarily mount without the option while creating the symlink, and set the option back afterwards. The special characters are only checked when creating a file (whether regular or special).

Ahh, I see!

I admit that I didn't think much about that windows_names parameter and simply forgot it. I will check this out later when I get home.

I'll edit this post with the results so others may find it - thanks!

Seems I'm not able to edit my post... just wanted to confirm that I was able to create the symlink when mounting the volume without "windows_names"

Thanks for the help!
